The Mama Shasha initiative sought to combat malnutrition by strengthening maternal and child nutrition programs. However, gaps in monitoring and evaluation (M&E) made it difficult to measure success or identify areas for improvement.
Zalates Analytics conducted comprehensive baseline and endline studies, designed digital data collection systems, and trained local teams in monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL).
Built a digital M&E framework that streamlined reporting and reduced data errors
Produced insights that helped USAID and implementing partners redesign nutrition service delivery
Strengthened program accountability and positioned the project for scaling across multiple regions

Agricultural interventions often focused on productivity without accounting for gender roles in farming, nutrition, and household decision-making. Women farmers, critical to household nutrition, were underrepresented in program planning.
We carried out an impact assessment to evaluate how gender-sensitive agricultural practices influenced nutrition and food security. This involved both quantitative analysis and qualitative insights from community members.
Generated evidence that women's participation directly improved household nutrition indicators
Informed NGOs and government programs on the importance of gender-responsive agricultural policies
Positioned Rwanda as a reference case for integrating gender into agricultural planning

Orange-fleshed sweet potatoes (OFSP) are nutrient-rich and vital for reducing Vitamin A deficiency. Yet, commercialization was limited due to uncertainties about market demand, production scalability, and investor interest.
Zalates conducted feasibility studies and business model analyses for OFSP puree production. We examined production costs (Puree biled, Puree with fiber), consumer demand, distribution chains, and profitability scenarios.
Demonstrated the economic viability of puree production for local consumption and export
Provided investors and NGOs with clear models to attract funding and scale production
Strengthened the case for OFSP as a tool to improve nutrition and farmer incomes simultaneously

Mozambique faced food insecurity and malnutrition challenges. Policymakers needed evidence on whether OFSP farming could be a sustainable solution.
We performed a production viability and nutritional impact study, evaluating land suitability, yield potential, and household-level nutrition benefits.
Validated that OFSP production could be scaled nationally as part of food security policy
Offered policymakers clear recommendations to integrate OFSP into national agricultural strategies
Highlighted the dual benefits: strengthening food systems and fighting hidden hunger (micronutrient deficiencies)

Oributiso Company wanted to introduce a nutritious juice product made from OFSP but lacked market insights. Without understanding consumer preferences and willingness-to-pay, launching posed financial risks.
We partnered with Oributiso to conduct consumer preference studies, taste tests, and pricing research.
Identified the right price point and product positioning for the juice
Enabled a successful product launch, which was both profitable and socially impactful
Contributed to diversifying Rwanda's agri-food sector with healthier options for consumers

Bakers in Nairobi sought to introduce fortified bread using OFSP but needed reliable data on consumer acceptance and pricing.
We led a willingness-to-pay study and consumer behavior research in urban markets.
Developed pricing strategies that maximized affordability and profitability
Guided bakeries in marketing nutritious bread effectively to urban consumers
Contributed to mainstreaming healthier food products in Kenya's urban markets
Strengthening maternal and child health programs.
Designing sustainable farming and commercialization models.
Helping businesses de-risk product launches.
Building systems that improve accountability and performance.
